Please Call Me a Slut

Tim murphy and Ben Breedlove of MotherJones magazine have decided to ask the eternal question

"Are you a slut? It's a question that, to be perfectly honest, we would have felt more than a little uncomfortable asking as recently as a few weeks ago. For one, there's the word itself—as misogynistic an insult as you could conjure. And there wasn't much of a peg, what with the rest of the world focused on more pressing issues, like Israel's threats of conflict with Iran, and jokes about Mitt Romney's dog (this is a particularly good one)"

Not only have they decided to ask this question but they have even created a flowchart ( this flow chart only applies to women not men) in which you can tell if you are in fact a slut. Now perhaps this was done for humorous purposes, I don’t know nor do I care. The double standard is just ridiculous. A man has conquests and a woman is just a crazy slut. You see this everywhere, in books, magazines, the movies and many, many television shows.

This article was written in 2012, but none of the basic idealism has in any way dissolved. I used to live in the Midwest as a young divorcee with three children whom I have partial custody of. I lived a life in constant battle with the handyman’s, the automobile mechanics and the over eager twenty year olds all attempting to get into my bed.

MotherJones probably wrote this article as a response to the famous Rush Limbaugh situation with that Georgetown law student,

“But then conservative icon Rush Limbaugh—who was once caught trying to bring 29 100 mg Viagra pills with him to the Dominican Republic—spent three days ripping into Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke (rhymes with "look"), calling her a "slut" and a "prostitute" for testifying before Congress about birth control, and suggesting that he'd like her to send him a sex tape. The #iamnotaslut Twitter campaign went viral; Limbaugh began losing sponsors (20, at last count). And now we can't seem to talk about anything else but "sluts." Seriously, just take a look at this chart from BuzzFeed.”

I too am educated, have bright, beautiful academically minded children and I don’t take birth control because I believe it probably gives you health problems later on down the road as you age. However, I am only one thing to the average Midwestern man which is an independent woman who can think for herself, in other words a “slut”.
