Playwright Terrence McNally, who has been writing about gays for three decades, wed his partner Tom Kirdahy April 6 in Washington, DC, according to the minister who married them.

The Rev. George Walker, a minister with DC's People's Congregational United Church of Christ, confirmed to me that he performed the ceremony for McNally, 71, and Kirdahy, 46. Same sex marriage was legalized in DC last month.

Kirdahy read a passage from McNally's controversial play "Corpus Christi" during the ceremony near Kennedy Center.

"It is good when two men love as James and Bartholomew do, and we recognize their union," Kirdahy read. "Love each other in sickness and in health."

"Corpus Christi" is to be performed here at Gallaudet University April 8-10 in conjunction with "Erase the Hate" week. A scheduled production of "Corpus Christi" was cancelled recently in Dallas.

Witnessing the wedding was actress Tyne Daly, who stars as Maria Callas in McNally's "Master Class" during Kennedy Center's three-McNally-play "Nights at the Opera" series.

On the eve of his wedding, McNally presented the Helen Hayes Tribute to fellow playwright Edward Albee, "a friend, colleague, and ex." The two renowned dramatists participated in the 26th annual Helen Hayes Awards, DC's version of Broadway's Tony Awards.
