Apparently PlayStation acquiring GaiKai cloud technology did more than give their PlayStation 4 an edge. So much so that next year when GaiKai is unleashed on the PS4, PlayStation will begin to shift from strictly a console provider to a service.
PlayStation plans to start using their cloud technology to stream games to other devices, Smart Tvs, PCs and Smartphones. They are in the process of studying ways to stream to these devices. In an interview with Dengeki Online (via Dualshockers), SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida stated:
"We previously spoke about PlayStation going from hardware to something closer to a service, regardless of the device — Of course PlayStation will still be the center, but I think we would like to expand to different things."
Their announcement of a cloud gaming library that can and will be used to stream games to the PS4, means PlayStation is well on their way to securing that reality. Their gaming library will be similar to Netflix and will already have a nice collection available when it launches. They will gradually increase the number of library titles. Their gaming library will also be compatible with the Vita at launch. Undoubtedly this library will soon make its way to other devices. But rest assured, PlayStation will always be its home.
