Yesterday, March 6, 2014, Sony informed us that Jack Tretton, a founding member of Sony PlayStation North America division and it's long time head is stepping down at the end of March. Tretton has been a constant PlayStation figurehead from the start. He helped PlayStation thrive from an upstart to a powerhouse that overthrew Nintendo.

According to a statement Sony issued, the decision not to renew Tretton's contract was mutual. Sony's current Network Entertainment International executive vice president Shawn Layden will take over as prsident and CEO.

Tretton has a solid foundation in selling physical products, Layden however, has spent the last few years developing a digital presence. Could this change represent a shift toward defining a digital dominance?

Tretton's tenur placed him among the longest serving executives in the North American video game industry. So naturally he couldn't leave without a few words of encouragement. "Working at SCEA for the past 19 years has been the most rewarding experience of my career", said Tretton.

"Although I will deeply miss the talented team at SCEA and the passion demonstrated everyday by our fans, I'm very excited about starting the next chapter of my career. I want to thank the employees, partners and customers for their tireless commitment to the PlayStation brand and, of course to our fans, who have pushedusto new heights of innovation and entertainment over the past two decades. I leave PlayStation in a position of considerable strength and the future will only get brighter forPlayStation Nation."

He also took the PlayStation Blog to personally thank PlayStation Nation for their continued support. Does anyone else need a tissue?
