Playstation Network accounts to be renamed 'Sony Entertainment Network' accounts

Sony formally announced plans on Monday to rename Playstation Network (PSN) accounts as Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) accounts. The move comes as part of plans to integrate the company's services across all hardware and entertainment platorms.

The name change will take place on February 7, 2012 and users will be required to agree to a new Terms of Service and User Agreement and Privacy Policy to continue using their account. This is a change in name only and none of the current service offerings will be changed or removed.

This move appears to be timed to coincide with the launch of the Playstation Vita next week in the United States and Europe. The handheld's abilities to serve up music and movie from Sony's Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services is probably one reason.

"This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering," Sony explained in an email announcing the change. "As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with 'Sony Entertainment Network.' This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account."
