Just five month after it launched, the Playstation 4 has already surpassed 7 million units worldwide according to a Sony press release announcement Wednesday. The console maker says this demonstrates, “the rapid growth of the PS4 platform.

"The response from the global gaming community for PS4 has been overwhelming and we are truly humbled that gamers are selecting PS4 as their next generation console of choice," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. The console is currently available 72 different countries.

"The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months," House continued.

Sony shared other stats as well including total game sales which passed the 20.5 million copies sold mark both at retail and through Playstation Store digital downloads. Owners have also performed more than 135 million “Shares” from the DualShock 4 controller and broadcast more than 4.9 million gameplay sessions via Twitch and Ustream with more than 90 million viewers watching those sessions.

The Playstation 4 was released on Nov. 15, 2013 in North America followed by Europe on Nov. 29. Sony expanded the console’s footprint to other countries through December and January before it was finally released in Japan on Feb. 22, 2014.

The consoles wars have continued to heat up between Sony and Microsoft as the PS4 jumped out to a clear lead over the Xbox One at launch. The last official sales figure released for the Xbox One was that the console ended 2013 with more than 3 million units sold.

The NPD will release the official North American sales figures for March on Thursday, April 17. This was expected to be a big month for the Xbox One with the release of “Titanfall” and the PS4 with the release of “inFamous: Second Son”.
