Playstation 3 Holiday Guide: First Person Shooters

Sony's latest console entry boasts hundreds of titles, and choosing the perfect one for a holiday gift isn't easy.  This Holiday Guide looks to remedy that situation with a simple breakdown of some of the best games in each genre.  But choosing the right gift isn't as easy as picking out a great game; there are other things to consider - is it age-appropriate?  Does it offer enough for a solo gamer?  Is it too difficult for younger gamers?  These considerations and more will be discussed as well, all to help you find the best gift for your gamer this Holiday season.  Today, we'll be looking at First Person Shooters.  The Playstation 3 has a strong FPS lineup, solidified by BioShock and their exclusive sci-fi title Killzone 2.  But it's the latest Call of Duty that's  at the top of the FPS wishlist.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (CoDMW2): The sequel to the heavily praised Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, CoDMW2 seems to have blown away everyone's expectations.  The game offers the same crisp visuals and intense shootouts as its predecessors, and adds even more dynamic action pieces and multiplayer options.  The solo campaign  is relatively short, so keep that in mind if you're looking for a game for someone who doesn't play online all that much.  There is a local multi-player option that offers several new missions for two to four players.  Buy it for: a gamer who loves playing shooters online.  Consider something else: for a gamer who hardly ever plays with other players online or otherwise.  ESRB Rating: M for mature.  Not recommended for children.  Also consider: the original, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - a cheap alternative for anyone new to the series and/or recent PS3 owners.

Killzone 2:  It was a long time coming, but Killzone 2's arrival on the PS3 has more than made up for the long wait.  The game offers a much more slower approach than most other FPS games; it encourages positioning, taking cover, and firing in accurate bursts.  Along with a solid solo campaign, the game offers multiplayer maps that you can play with friends locally or alone with bots.  The multiplayer offering, with its multi-tiered maps and various game types, is one of the most exciting FPS experiences online.  Buy it for: a gamer who prefers a more tactical FPS.  Consider something else: for a gamer looking for more of a "run 'n gun" style of play.  ESRB Rating: M for mature.  Not recommended for children.  Also consider: SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation.  It's not a first person shooter, but it offers a similar (and also, a more) tactical approach to shootouts as Killzone 2.  Before you buy, be aware that SOCOM is an online-only title.

Bioshock:  In some ways, Bioshock is more like a first person adventure than a first person shooter.  The game's sci-fi story is just as engrossing as the game's visuals, and the action offers a myriad of weapons and creative "plasmids" (think of them as magic spells or simply special powers).  The adventure is full of curious characters and  choices that affect how the game is played, all set against the backdrop that is Rapture, a particularly enamoring world full of intrigue and fear.  This is a slow-paced shooter, but the various options in battle keep things interesting.  Buy it for: a gamer who enjoys both shooters and adventure games, as well as a good story.  Consider something else: for a gamer looking for a more typical FPS.  ESRB Rating: M for mature.  Not recommended for children.  Also consider: The Orange Box.  This is actually a collection of several games, including the First Person Puzzler Portal, but it's Valve's Half-Life titles that offer an adventure in the same way that Bioshock does.
