PlaySay - learning language on the go

PlaySay makes learning a language fun!

The Philadelphia region is experiencing a surge of growth with entrepreneurial, technology companies. In this series, we are reporting on fascinating organizations that we have spoken to who are turning their dream into reality.

The first company we are profiling, PlaySay, began out of the need to learn a language. The company’s founder, Ryan Meinzer, had to learn Japanese fast. The traditional ways of learning language, such as Rosetta Stone, required a roughly $300 payment that Ryan did not possess. As a highly mobile individual, and one who loves mobile technology, Ryan explored the notion of creating virtual flash cards on his mobile device. Once discovering how effective the technology had been for him personally, others encouraged Ryan to take it further. Thus, PlaySay was born.

Essentially, PlaySay enables busy people to learn a language while on the go. The capability runs on any mobile device such as cell phones and iPods. With PlaySay, the mobile device becomes a foreign language teacher with great flexibility since it can be used anywhere and at any time. Currently PlaySay is available for those learning Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish with more languages on the way.

A video demonstration has been included that shows PlaySay running on an iPod. For more information on PlaySay check out their website at http://www.playsay.com

Another great resource for Language on the Go: The Hello-Hello Spanish iPad features Hello-Hello.com’s complete Spanish course developed in collaboration with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Hello-Hello Spanish includes 30 conversational lessons and hundreds of flashcards with words and sentences to practice vocabulary. The course follows ACTFL’s research-based approach to teaching languages; all lessons are based on realistic situations, rather than a collection of out-of-context words and phrases. All the content is stored in the app so that users will experience rapid response time when they are ready to learn a language. Users do not need to be connected to Wi-Fi or 3G networks to run the app.
