Playoffs Not a Guarantee for Laguna Hills Football

As soon as Laguna Hills beat Dana Hills last Friday, I tweeted a ceremonious congrats to the Hawks for making it into the playoffs. Seems I was a little too quick to pull that trigger (and just when I was getting the hang of it!).

Despite the fact that it’s the last week of the regular season and the Hawks (6-3, 3-1) are in first place in the Sea View League, there’s still a chance they could miss the playoffs. Believe it!

Here’s out it goes:

If Dana Hills beats San Juan Hills on Friday and Capo Valley beats Aliso Niguel, it would create a 3-way tie for the league title (Dana Hills has the tiebreaker over Capo Valley, who has the tiebreaker over Laguna Hills).

Since only the two top teams are guaranteed playoff spots in the Sea View League, this would mean a coin flip would determine those top two spots. Darn you CIF rules!

To make it even more interesting, San Juan Hills and Aliso Niguel have already been eliminated and will be the visiting teams. Which means this 3-way tie/coin flip scenario is very likely.

Remember, the Hawks have a bye this week, so they’re done with their regular season.

Now, the good news is that both Capo Valley and Laguna Hills are probable to earn an At-Large berth (Southwest Division gets two). So even with a bad coin flip call, the Hawks have a shot of making it into the playoffs that way.

If you’re a Hawk’s fan, you may want to throw an eyeball at these games:

Aliso Niguel (5-4, 0-3) at Capo Valley (7-2, 2-1) – Friday, Nov. 2, 7 p.m.

Capo Valley should have no problem beating the Wolves at home. And with a Dana Hills loss, that would put the Cougars in a first place tie with the Hawks (placing determined by a coin flip).

San Juan Hills (7-2, 1-2) at Dana Hills (3-6, 2-1) – Friday, Nov. 2, 7 p.m.

After losing a 27-31 heartbreaker against Laguna Hills last week, the Dolphins should be geared up to win this important game. But don’t completely count out the Stallions. There’ll be plenty of seniors playing in their last prep football game for San Juan Hills and that’s always a motivation to victory.
