The National Tour of Gershwins' “Porgy and Bess” (winner of the 2012 Tony Award® for Best Musical Revival) will be coming in early February to Cleveland’s PlayhouseSquare. The show is part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.

The tour boasts a 23-piece orchestra that includes 20 local musicians as well as a stellar cast. Performances will begin on Tuesday, February 4 and run through February 16, 2014. This is the only Ohio stop for the tour as it will be playing in over 20 cities in the United States during its first outing.

Tickets are on sale now and range in price from $10 to $70 and are available at the PlayhouseSquare Ticket Office (located in the State Theatre lobby at 1519 Euclid Avenue, online at playhousesquare.org; or by calling 216-241-6000. Group orders of 15 or more may be placed by calling 216-640-8600.

The show is based on Dubose Heyward popular novel “Porgy” that later became a play by the same name (which he wrote with his wife Dorothy). This Broadway revival of “The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess” captures all the grandeur of the originally staged Broadway production and includes such memorable songs as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing.”

It is the story of loss and redemption set in Charleston’s fabled Catfish Row. Bess struggles against the odds to distance herself from her colorful past. It is through the courage and love of Porgy that she can turn her back on her former lover, Crown, and the temptations put before her by the smooth talking character, Sporting Life. It is the tale of Porgy and Bess’ relationship and how it develops into romance that triumphs over all.

“The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess” will play February 4 through 16 at PlayhouseSquare. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 PM with matinees Saturday at 1:30 PM and Sunday at 1:00 PM. Sunday evening performances are at 6:30 PM.
