Direct from Israel. Eleven deaf-blind actors
The show will run March 19, 20 & 22, 2014 (there is no performance scheduled for Friday, March 21, 2014)
PlayhouseSquare is pleased to welcome “Not By Bread Alone” that was created and is performed by Nalaga'at Deaf-Blind Acting Ensemble, directed by Adina Tal in the Ohio Theatre. This stop at PlayhouseSquare in Cleveland, Ohio is one of only a few US tour dates scheduled.
The show comes direct from Isreal and involves eleven deaf-blind actors who through their creativeness, self sufficiency and joy share their personal inner worlds of darkness, silence, hopes, memories, dreams and bread. The company lives between reality and fantasy, grandeur and ridicule, but manages to focus on the basic meaning of bread which symbolically signifies “home”.
In preparing for the show (which took two years) many months were spent in the study of the process of baking bread while adapting the length of the play to encompass the duration of preparation and baking which creates a link to the audience in a commonly shared time sequence. In the course of the performance, dough is kneaded, raised and baked “for real” as a special link is established between those on stage and the spectators.
The “Nalaga’at” deaf-blind acting ensemble offers an artistic and human experience, emphasizing the importance of physical touch and relationships which promotes universal values of solidarity, mutual respect, tolerance and coexistence.
Presented with the generous support from the Cleveland Israel Arts Connection, a program of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland.
