“Motown the Musical” will be in PlayhouseSquare on October 3 through 19, 2014 at the State Theatre and tickets are now on sale by going on line at www.playhousesquare.org, by calling (216) 241-6000 or by visiting the PlayhouseSquare Ticket Office that is located at 1519 Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland. “Motown the Musical” is part of the KeyBank Broadway Series at PlayhouseSquare and is produced by Kevin McCollum, Doug Morris and Berry Gordy and Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and tells the story of Berry Gordy’s American Dream who began as a featherweight boxer to become a music mogul who launched the careers of such luminaries as Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and so many more.
The show features choreography by Patricia Wilcox “Blues in the Night” and Warren Adams “Toy Story”, scenic design by David Korins “Bring It On” and “The Musical, Annie”, costume design by Tony Award® nominee ESosa “The Gershwins”, “Porgy and Bess” and “Project Runway”, lighting design by Tony Award® winner Natasha Katz “Once” and “Sister Act”, sound design by Tony Award® nominee Peter Hylenski “Rock of Ages” and “The Scottsboro Boys”, projection design by Daniel Brodie “Jekyll and Hyde”, hair and wig design by Charles LaPointe “Memphis” and casting by Telsey + Company.
“Motown the Musical” is arranged and orchestrated by Grammy and Tony Award® nominee Ethan Popp “Rock of Ages”, who also serves as music supervisor in reproducing the classic “Sound of Young America,” with co-orchestrations and additional arrangements by Tony Award® nominee Bryan Crook “Smash” and dance arrangements by Zane Mark “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”.
“Motown the Musical” is produced by Tony Award® winning producer Kevin McCollum “Rent”, “In the Heights” and “Avenue Q”), Chairman and CEO of SONY Music Entertainment Doug Morris and Motown founder Berry Gordy.
The show features more than 40 classic hits such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and the stories behind the hits as Berry and the Motown family takes on the world in creating a soundtrack that changed the world while breaking down barriers in America.
Clifton Oliver and Allison Semmes star in the lead roles of Berry Gordy and Diana Ross with Nicholas Christopher playing Smokey Robinson, Jarran Muse as Marvin Gaye with a special appearance by Leon Outlaw, Jr. and Reed L. Shannon as Berry Gordy’s boyhood persona as well as Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.

“Motown the Musical” will play October 3 – 19 at the State Theatre at PlayhouseSquare. Performances will be Tuesdays – Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tickets start at just $10, and will be on sale beginning Friday, August 1 at 11AM.
