Players who have hit the most home runs in a season for the New York Mets

The New York Mets have been playing in the major leagues since 1962. These are the New York Mets players who have hit the most home runs in a season for the team.

The Mets have had some great home run hitters playing for them over the years. Three of these players hit well over 400 career home runs, while two others are well over 300. None of the players are yet in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and it's unclear if any of them will ever get in.

New York Mets players with most home runs in one season

T-1. Carlos Beltran - 41

Carlos Beltran hit the most home runs in a season for the New York Mets with 41. Beltran hit the 41 home runs during the 2006 season, his second full season with the Mets, when he also had 116 RBIs and 127 runs scored.

Many Mets fans could not care less that Carlos Beltran hit the most home runs in a season for team. All they remember is Carlos Beltran striking out with the bases loaded vs the St. Louis Cardinals that season to end the NLCS.

T-1. Todd Hundley - 41

Catcher Todd Hundley is tied with Carlos Beltran for hitting the most home runs in a season for the New York Mets with 41. Hundley hit the 41 home runs during the 1996 season.

At that time, the 41 home runs were the most ever in a season by a catcher. Javy Lopez broke that record in 2003, when he hit 42 home runs for the Atlanta Braves.

3. Mike Piazza - 40

Mike Piazza hit the third most home runs in a season for the New York Mets, when he hit 40 during the 1999 season. The Mets are the only team I can think of that have two catchers among the top three players who have hit the most home runs in a season.

T-4. Darryl Strawberry - 39

Darryl Strawberry hit 39 home runs for the Mets in 1987. At the time, that was the most home runs ever for a Mets player for one season.

T-4. Darryl Strawberry - 39

Darryl Strawberry hit another 39 home runs in 1988. His 39 home runs in 1987 did not lead the league, but the 39 home runs in 1988 did lead the National League.

T-6. Carlos Delgado - 38

Carlos Delgado hit 38 home runs for the Mets during the 2006 season. Delgado was a great home run hitter.

On September 25, 2003, Delgado hit four home runs in his first four at-bats in a game vs the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In a move I still don't understand to this day, Delagado was then taken out of the game. He remains the only player in baseball history to hit four home runs in a game in just four at-bats.

T-6. Carlos Delgado - 38

Carlos Delgado also hit 38 home runs for the Mets in the 2008 season. For his career, Carlos Delgado hit 473 home runs. A great total, but probably a little short for getting him into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

T-6. Mike Piazza - 38

Mike Piazza hit 38 home runs during the 2000 season. Piazza hit 427 career home runs, and 396 as a catcher, which is the most ever by a catcher. He would be a lock of the Hall of Fame just on stats, but voters who are unsure if he used PEDs will not vote him in.

T-6. Howard Johnson - 38

Howard Johnson hit 38 home runs for the Mets in 1991.

T-10. Darryl Strawberry - 37

Darryl Strawberry hit 37 home runs in 1990 for the Mets.

T-10. Dave Kingman - 37

Dave Kingman hit 37 home runs for the New York Mets during the 1976 season. That broke the Mets single season home run mark for a player. The record lasted until Darryl Strawberry broke it in 1986.

T-10. Dave Kingman - 37

Kingman also hit 37 home runs for the Mets during the 1982 season. I have made the argument in the past that Mark McGwire was Dave Kingman on steroids. If McGwire did not use PEDs, I think he would have had a very similar career to Dave Kingman statistically.
