Garrett Rank dominated Friday’s second round of the Players Amateur Presented by Nautica and set the competitive South course record with a 62 at the Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton, S.C. The Canadian broke the previous record at the Hilton Head-area course by one stroke and takes a five-shot lead into the weekend.

After his round Rank tweeted, “Personal best today with 10 birdies and 8 pars. Not bad for a Canadian!”

Rank is a 26-year old University of Waterloo graduate who lives in Elmira, Ontario, and makes a living as a referee for the American Hockey League. He had six birdies on the front nine and followed them up with four on the back.

"I am just going to continue to stay really patient out there," he said after his round, "hit really good shots and see what happens." His two day total was an 11- under 133.

Defending champion and Vanderbilt golfer Hunter Stewart and University of South Carolina golfer Matt NeSmith are five shots behind Rand and tied for second. University of Georgia's Nick Reach finished up at 5-under for the fourth place spot.

The popular tournament has one of the biggest perks in golf with the amateur winner getting an exemption into the PGA TOUR RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island’s Harbour Town Links. Both tournaments are run by the Hilton Head Heritage Classic Foundation.

The tournament draws top players from colleges around the country along with international players. Past winners include PGA TOUR standouts Bill Haas, Rickie Fowler, Ben Curtis, Bud Cauley, Brian Harman and Camilo Villegas. Australian Daniel Nisbet was the 2012 winner.

The 2013 tournament was plagued by bad weather and shortened to 54 holes but Friday’s round was only interrupted once when play was suspended at 1:40 pm due to storms in the area. Players were back on the course at 2:06 pm.

Berkeley Hall is located off Highway 278 in Bluffton and spectators are welcome to watch the future stars at no charge.
