Last year as a fourth-year junior, Fiona Flanagan was one of the captains of the Drexel Dragons along with departed seniors Hollie Mershon, Taylor Wootton and Renee Johnson-Allen. This upcoming season, Flanagan will be the unquestioned leader of a young Dragons team with help from her fellow senior teammates Abby Redick and Tory Thierolf.
Flanagan has been a complementary player in past seasons by knocking down three-point jumpers off passes from Mershon and Johnson-Allen and guarding both perimeter and post players on the defensive end of the floor. No doubt that her three's and defense will still be needed, but Flanagan may need to shoulder more of the offensive burden this season.
Flanagan is the second-leading returning scorer from last year with a 5.4 PPG average, only behind sophomore point guard Meghan Creighton, who finished her rookie campaign at a 5.9 PPG clip. Both Creighton and fellow sophomore Rachel Pearson will need to increase their offensive output as well but Flanagan will definitely need to chip in a bit more.
The senior from Penn Valley, PA certainly has the ability to score in double-figures, having done so in three out of the six WNIT games in March and April last season; so perhaps Flanagan can take that momentum at the end of the year into this season.
Flanagan will have a big role on this year's team both on and off the court and given her attitude and work ethic, she is certainly up to the task.
