The Playa Bonita salsa social, which kicked off last November at the Playa Bonita restaurant in San Jose, is moving to Saturdays, announced Max Jose Enrique, the event organizer. The final Friday night event will be held on Friday, January 17th 2014 before the event switches to Saturdays, with a big kickoff party on Saturday, January 25th.
One of the South Bay's newest salsa socials, Playa Bonita has grown in a short time to become popular salsa spot among South Bay salsa aficionados. The event features salsa lessons from Grizzly Hidriago, a 2-time World Salsa Champion from LA, and often features live music from the Bay Area's top local bands.
The venue is located just a few blocks from Willow Glen in San Jose, and provides a nice (if small) wood dance floor, full bar, and plenty of free parking.
It is unclear how the social will do, with the move to Saturdays. There are already a number of salsa events held on Saturdays in San Jose including the popular South Bay Mambonova Social and Hot Salsa Saturday. Both events will compete for the attention of the local dancing talent. A similar social called "Tekilarock" featuring live salsa music in Sunnyvale closed down last year due to lack of attendance.
Still, Playa Bonita will remain one of the few venues in the South Bay to host live music, which draws a large crowd outside of the usual salsa scene. Many dancers may also continue to come for instruction from Grizzly, who recently started a dance team in San Jose, and whose students are likely to attend the social. Playa Bonita also recently started a bachata social on Tuesday nights.
The grand re-opening of Playa Bonita takes place on Saturday, January 25th, and is sure to draw a big crowd. More info on their Facebook page.
