The novel begins by introducing Savannah homicide detective Elise Sandburg, and her new partner David.
Both have dark pasts Elise thought to be the daughter of a famous root doctor with ties to the Voodoo, and Gullah culture, was deserted in a graveyard as an infant. While David a Savannah transplant is attempting to escape the pain of losing his child to murder by his own mother.
As a result, their professional relationship starts out rather rocky, add to that the discovery that a sinister individual is using a substance that causes its victims body to mimic a state of death while their mind remains fully aware.
Before long the city is in a panic, and people begin to wonder how to tell the real dead from the living.
Reluctantly diving back into her past and taking David with her, Elise hopes that she find this sadistic killer before it’s too late.
