Play a 1000 player game of 'Bomberman' with the new browser-based 'Bombermine' (Photos)

The nostalgia will hit hard for those who grew up with Bomberman on the NES and SNES as the new clone Bombermine now takes the classic gameplay of the retro titles and puts it on a massive scale with 1000 players in a single online game.

The premise of the game is simple, disintegrate your fellow players with placed bombs on the ground. The longer you stay alive, the more time you have to collect powerups to make your job easier in reducing your enemies into ashes. The amount of kills you have determines your rank on the leaderboard that's displayed at the end of the game.

Like the original Bomberman, the game's simplicity adds to its addictiveness. Having a massively multiplayer online capability is just the icing on the cake. If you spend two minutes playing a game or two hours, you're bound to have a good time in doing so.

Bombermine is not just an emulator as it introduces new elements into the series such as random powerups that can transform you into the internet-famous Nyan Cat, Kenny from South Park and Slowpoke from the Pokémon universe. Each of these characters has a special ability or disadvantage which puts a new spin on the way you play. Invisibility, reversed controls and shields are also a few things you'll encounter while playing.

One complaint to be had about this game is the persistent chat on the right side of the screen. There's no way to hide the chat-bar and it tends to get bothersome when your fellow players are spewing obscenities at every opportunity. There are no filters or moderators so be prepared to hear what the anonymous people of the internet have to say.

Bombermine has a lot of potential to be one of the greatest time-wasters of 2013 but only time will tell if this browser-based game will succeed in blowing up your productivity at work or school.

You can play Bombermine here, have fun and happy bombing.
