Loving a city as much as I love Pasadena doesn’t mean every restaurant measures up to greatness. But I have to tell you that Plate 38, a frequent spot on my travels doesn’t disappoint. I began coming here when it was more of a bakery and café then the recently updated version of more of a bar and restaurant. It doesn’t matter what they do with the décor because it doesn’t change the food – which is obviously most important to me.
As simple as it sounds, they have by far the best Garlic Herb Fries ($3.50) in town – crispy on the outside and cut into thin julienne slices which is the perfect way to eat fries. You haven’t seen sunlight until you’ve tried their Roasted Tomato Soup with shaved parmesan and garlic oil at $6.50 it’s a steal – I would pay ten dollars for it! For me the starter of Tempura Calamari and Rock Shrimp – bell pepper, sesame, pickled ginger and cilantro vinaigrette for $9.00 is bursting with flavor and seasoned oh, so beautifully!
Don’t count out their brunch – their Eggs Benedict ($16.00) – with choice of short rib; crab cake or salmon is perfectly married with the smooth and delicious hollandaise sauce. It doesn’t stop here – there is always the Vegetarian Egg Scramble, Shrimp and Grits, Croque Madame or countless other entrees.
Although I haven’t eaten dinner here, locals tell me it’s a great neighborhood stop for wine and beer and entrees that include burgers, salads, or small plates such as Tuna Poke Tower, Duck Confit Chicken Wings, or large plates as Mixed Shellfish Cioppino, Garlic Marinated Skirt Steak or 3 Meat Lasagna, just to name a few.
