Another death at the hands of the SAME unqualified, non-board certified doctor that was responsible for the death of Kellee Lee-Howard, the subject of yesterday's article. Alberto Sant Antonio performed liposuction and a fat-transfer procedure on a housekeeper and mother of two, Maria Shortall, who was only 38 years old but died of cardiac arrest in June as a result of the procedure.
Seems that Florida does not have a shortage of untrained, unqualified doctors posing as plastic surgeons. Rohie Kah-Orukotan who lives in Weston, Florida also died after liposuction by a doctor who was not a plastic surgeon. Florida health officials alleged that Omar Brito, whose training was in occupational health, was doing cosmetic sugery without enough training or the proper equipment, according to Florida State Medical Board records.
Ms. Kah-Orukotan got manicures and had her liposuction done at the same place - Weston MedSpa. She was rushed to the hospital and taken off life support about a week later. A lawsuit has been filed by the victim's family but to date no response has been filed. The cause of death, according to the Florida medical examiner, was "lidocaine toxity," an overdose.
Florida State Senator Eleanor Sobel is a Democrat in Broward County who is vice chair of the Senate health regulations committee. She says, "It's all about people doing a job they're not qualified to do." She is trying to get a bill passed to regulate so-called med-spas as medical clinics which would subject them to inspection.
Sobel further states, "I don't think these general practitioners are skilled in anesthesia, which could be deadly. The issue is not going away and needs to be resolved."
Unfortunately, any doctor with a license to practice medicine can perform any procedure a patient wants done. Many non-plastic surgeons have decided to go for the areas where there's limited oversight, more money, and little, if any, interference from insurers because elective cosmetic surgery typically isn't covered.
Know what I'm going to say next? Make sure your doctor is a board certified plastic surgeon. Check with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Check their name under "google" for any complaints about the doctor. DO YOUR HOMEWORK and save your life.
