Balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) is a beautiful perennial that is named because its flower buds puff up like balloons before bursting. Purple-blue flowers bloom throughout summer, singly or in small clusters, atop stems growing to 30” tall. There are also varieties that bloom in white. Deadheading will prolong the bloom season.
Platycodon prefers to grow in full sun to partial shade conditions. They grow easily from seed, and keep in mind they are slow to emerge in spring. This is important to remember so the fragile root systems aren’t disturbed during spring clean up. They like moisture but not wt or poorly draining soil.
