Planning an Incarnation: Who calls the shots? (Photos)

Elizabeth C., an intuitive and thoughtful Lightworker living in New Hampshire, recently wrote to me with some insightful and important questions about Karma. Here are Liz’s questions and my answers, the intention of this column being to share this information with others who might have similar thoughts on their minds:

Liz: If Karma is essentially PAYBACK for past actions, how is it the life we're living is planned by us? Wouldn't a soul just be stuck with what she had coming and therefore could not plan for what would essentially be one heck of a crappy Karmic-payback lifetime?

Sherri: Karma is energy that needs to be balanced, and it can be negative or positive. If we do something that creates negative Karma, we will eventually balance that energy, either in this lifetime or in future lifetimes. We are never stuck with ‘what we have coming’ because we are the ones who decide what and how we will deal with specific Karma/balance energy during a particular lifetime; also there are ways to balance energy in-between lives, too.

Before we come back into body, we essentially sit down with something akin to a planning committee and create a blueprint for what we want to learn and experience, and what Karma we want to deal with/energy we want to balance. Then we create situations or windows of opportunity that will occur during our upcoming incarnation so we can reach our learning and experiential goals. We WANT to balance that Karmic energy--no one forces us to do anything. We’re in control of what’s in our life plan; we made the decisions about what we experience.

Sometimes we take on a lot more than maybe we should in one lifetime and that’s when it can seem like we are very unlucky or someone is out to get us. That said, there are things that happen to us that are not planned by us, and those things happen because of freewill. And, sometimes things can go wrong, kind of like a computer bug in our brain or someone else’s brain and unplanned events can and do happen. We also have help from other souls who incarnate with us to help us reach our learning goals, and sometimes, when they create situations that we don’t love, but are necessary to the plan we created for ourselves, we refer to them as relationship villains.

Liz: If one is now living this bad Karma lifetime for past life actions, isn't it true that one can do nothing whatever about it during said lifetime...payback is payback...and the only thing one can do is make certain the NEXT incarnation isn't so hard?

Sherri: We can always do something about Karma. First, we can stop looking at it as payback—and start looking at it as a balancing of energy. When we look at it this way, it takes on new meaning and a new perspective. If you feel like something in your life is Karmic-related, meditate and ask your Higher Self and/or your Guides if it’s Karma-related, and then ask what you can do to quickly learn the lesson so that you don’t become bogged down in a life script to balance the energy. Recognizing a window of opportunity to learn a lesson that we planned is part of expediting our spiritual growth. It never hurts to ask Spirit for Guidance about the best way to balance energy. Asking Spirit a direct question during mediation is also a way to start an on-going back and forth relationship that will continually help you make the best possible choices.

Liz: If one's thoughts and actions were only ever positive and one had no Karmic payback coming lifetime after lifetime, wouldn't a soul still plan difficult life challenges because this is how we LEARN and GROW? Aren't challenges taken on for their own sake, Karmic payback notwithstanding?

Sherri: Yes, I agree with you. Because the Earth is a schoolhouse and we are here to learn, it’s more than possible that we would plan difficult challenges in order to learn and grow. We might do it to help others learn and grow, too, or to help our planet during a time of need. You’ve made an important point here, Liz—our souls plan what we experience, we’re in control, even though the veil keeps us from knowing our plan of action.

Even though it doesn’t feel like it, our soul, that aspect of God/Creator/Source that is currently playing the role of [insert your name here], is in control and has designed a specific blueprint to move us forward in whatever way is important to our individual growth. And this is where our Higher Self comes in: Like a GPS unit inside our body, that little voice within guides subconsciously through our gut feelings, and if we take the time to meditate with intention and listen, we can begin direct communication that will help us find those windows of opportunity much faster and with less drama and pain.
