Planning a trip with your dog

From the moment you begin planning your next trip, your dog senses something is coming and is waiting to receive information even before the suitcases come out. Animals are in a constant state of picking up subtle messages from your thoughts and emotions, so the excitement you feel while developing your itinerary creates emotional signals you unknowingly emit to your dog.

Communicating your plans to your dog can alleviate much of his or her anticipation. Yes, your dog will understand what you are talking about if you speak to them clearly with your heart and mind in sync.  But talking to your dog isn’t just about “speaking” words.  It is about consciously sending the thoughts and images you want to share with your dog.  All communication must be generated in your heart and then blended with thoughts you send from your mind. This technique will create a strong, clear message about your upcoming trip.

Most importantly your thoughts and words have to feel safe and positive to you.  If you have any anxiety related to your plans, your dog will pick up on and respond to this first.

Once the itinerary is set, you can send your dog pictures from your mind or memory to explain the details.   If you are traveling by car, you can tell your dog, “We will begin the trip when I put your dog bed in the car.”  This way he or she will not mistake trips to the dog park or a nearby visit with a vacation adventure.  Visualizing your departure, the destination and your arrival back home will rid your dog of stress confusing your trip with a transport or a move.  A helpful resource for planning a trip is Fido Friendly which reviews dog friendly getaways and resorts.

Each animal is an individual, so their questions and concerns about travel will reflect their unique situations and circumstances.  With a little planning and heartfelt communication stemming from your dog’s perspective, you can create a travel experience that is safe, fun and understood by your dog.
