As the weather heats up, the time is right to plan a Virginia Beach getaway. One of the most popular East Coast beaches, Virginia Beach celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013.

Whether you're planning a couples getaway weekend, a day trip or a summer vacation with the entire family, Virginia Beach is a great destination for enjoying fun in the sun.

The Virginia Beach Boardwalk will take you anywhere you want to go oceanfront. The boardwalk was first built in 1888 and is rated one of America's favorite boardwalks by many travel guides.

Virginia Beach's Boardwalk is listed among the top 10 boardwalks in the U.S. From live music to restaurants, the Boardwalk is a busy hub of activities to suit people of all ages.

The boardwalk is 28' wide and three miles long with a separate bike path. You can rent bikes, family bikes and roller blades from numerous stands on the oceanfront.

For day-trippers, there's public parking available in parking lots located at 2nd Street, 4th Street, 9th Street, 19th Street, 25th Street, and 31st Street as well as Croatan to the south, Rudee Loop at 2nd Street, and Sandbridge.

You'll also find metered parking on the street, but plan to arrive early in the day to find a spot. Most lots are open from 8 a.m. to midnight or later with Sandbridge open until 5 p.m.

Walkways lead from Atlantic Avenue to the boardwalk at nearly every block. Fully accessible walkways lead all the way to the water's edge at 2nd Street, 8th Street, 17th Street, 24th Street, and 30th Street.

Visit the south end of the beach to watch great surfing, walk or ride on the boardwalk, build sand castles on the beach, or body surf in the water. The north end of the beach is quieter for those who are looking for a slower pace.

There's music on the oceanfront stages and at the street corners all summer on the weekends with various festivals. There's a complete listing at the website linked at the beginning of this article of what's happening at the beach each day.

You don't need a guide to know what to do on a day trip to the beach. Oceanfront is the place to be. Whether you're digging in the sand, building a sand castle, lying on the sand reading a book, jumping the waves, or my favorite, riding a float on the waves, enjoy a wonderful day at Virginia Beach.

A beach vacation relaxes, refreshes and renews the soul. Life is different at the beach. Plan your Virginia Beach getaway and let the gentle rhythm of the waves take away all of your worries and cares.
