Carter Mountain Orchard is definitely a must-see destination experience, offering sweeping mountain-top vistas of the region as well as pre-picked fruits and pumpkins, plus events and festivals throughout the year. Carter Mountain Orchard is open July through Thanksgiving each year, with weekend hours during the month of December. Chiles Peach Orchard and Farm Market in Crozet is another great destination farm experience affording sweeping valley views, fruit orchards and berry patches. Hours may vary by season, but generally Chiles Peach Orchard and Farm market is open Monday-Saturdays 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Sundays. A retail shop on premises makes available to the general public all manner of local produce, breads, ciders, donuts and ice cream are available for purchase. Souvenir tops, jackets and other items are also available for purchase. A short, scenic drive down State Route 250 out of Charlottesville, past Crozet, with a subsequent left turn onto Route 151 places one in the direct path of Nelson 151 attractions, which includes Critzer Family Farm. Located at 9388 Critzer Shop Road, Afton VA, 22920, Critzer Family Farm offers the widest variety of pick-your-own produce, which ranges from fruits, to vegetables to onions, with daily changes according to the season. The retail open-air shed/shop also stocks preserves, annuals and perennials. Pre-picked produce is also available in smaller quantities at Critzer Family Farm, which is open closed on Sundays, but open 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Henley’s Orchard offers quite the selection of fruit, with 28 varieties of peaches and 30 varieties of apples. Henley’s Orchard is open 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday and from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. on Sundays, starting around the 4th of July each year, through mid-November. Saunders Brothers Farm Market is located in Nelson County, a good hours or more drive from Charlottesville, but what drive it is, through a valley floor with mountain peaks all around. The Saunders Brothers Farm Market is part of a family orchard located at. The fruit is all pre-picked for the customers and includes peaches, apples, Asian pears and vegetables. The Saunders Brothers Farm Market also features annuals, perennials and flowering shrubs, as well as a country store stocked with local cuts of meat, preserves, ciders, baking mixes, baked goods and ice cream. Just a short drive up the road from Saunders Brothers Farm Market is mountain top Seaman’s Family Orchard, a fourth-generation family farm specializing in summer berry pickin’ (strawberries, blueberries and cherries) with a side of apples and pumpkins in the fall harvest season. Offering both pick-your-own and pre-picked fruit, the fruit becomes a secondary venture once you take in the mountain views from Seaman’s Family Orchard. Hours at the orchard vary by season but the website is clear about listing what is in season or out of season.
