Places, Synthetic Elements and more: Denver live music weekend picks Jan. 6-7

Welcome to the first full weekend of 2012! Denver’s kicking off the year with great live music all over town. If you’re trying to decide where to go, here are a few promising gigs to point you in the right direction.
 
FRIDAY, JAN. 6

Amanda Hawkins (frontwoman for local alt-rock band DELLA) is headlining a solo show at The Walnut Room, 3131 Walnut Street in Denver. Also appearing are Julie Zorilla and Devan Blake Jones. Tickets are $12 each, plus service charge, available from The Walnut Room. Doors at 6:00 PM; show starts at 7:00. Ages 21+.

Local punk/ska band Synthetic Elements is playing a show at the Gothic Theatre, 3263 S. Broadway in Englewood, along with The Namesakes, DB and the Catastrophe, Hatrick Penry and Too Late for Tomorrow. Tickets are $10 each, plus service charge, available through Gothic Theatre. Doors at 7:00 PM; show starts at 8:00. Ages 16+.
 
SATURDAY, JAN. 7

Local pop/rock band Places is hosting a CD release show at the Marquis Theater, 2009 Larimer in downtown Denver. Also playing are Regret Night, Be Brave and The Canopy. Tickets are $8 each, available from Soda Jerk Presents. Doors at 7:30 PM. This is an all-ages show!
 
Local hip-hop act The Pirate Signal is playing at the Meadowlark Bar, 2701 Larimer Street in Denver, along with 200 Million Years and Go Star. Cover charge at the door; music starts around 9:00 PM. Ages 21+.
