In Pittsburgh, Pa we heard the stories of the mysterious legendary beast called the Kraken. Also for generations the Giant Squid was considered a legend. But could the Kraken be the Giant Squid. Norway natural historians described the Kraken, as the biggest of the giant sea monsters. Many stories abound in Norway's literature, for legend has it that fisherman over the centuries have been terrorized by the sudden appearance and disappearance of the kraken. Modern skeptics tend to dismiss the kraken, saying that witnesses had probably been confused by sightings of giant squids.
Up until recently, the only proof we had of the giant squid's existence was in the legends of ancient mariners and the scars on whales that eat squid. But in 2004, a research team found proof near Japan's Bonin Islands. They captured on film over 500 images of a 26 foot long creature trying to take bait from the end of the camera.
Tsunemi Kubodera of the of the National Science Museum in Tokyo and Kyoichi Mori of the Osagawara Whale Watching Association made their discovery public in September 2005.
The Giant Squid, is purplish red, has eight arms in tooth-lined suction cups. It has the largest eyes of any living creature; up to a foot in diameter. It has a beak wide enough to swallow a basketball whole. Its length can reach to 44 feet.
Could the Giant Squid be the Kraken. There is probably larger giant squid still lurking in the depths of the sea. The Japanese scientists who captured this one on film dove into water so deep that no light penetrated it. They were the first to catch one on film.
