Pittsburghers check out the most complete dinosaur fossil skeleton

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh has the most complete fossilized skeleton of a sauropod dinosaur. It is a young Camarasaurus that is still partly encased in the sandstone in which it was found nearly a century ago. It is about two-fifths the size of an adult Camarasurus.

The Camarasaurus along with the Diplodocus and the Apatosaurus were the most common dinosaur fossils found in the western states of America.

The young Camarasurus fossil was found by Earl Douglass and field crew in 1920 at the Morrison formation in what is now Dinosaur National Monument in Utah. An adult skull of a Camarasaurus was found in 1915. It is also on display showing its thick spoon-like teeth that were different from other sauropods. Camarasaurus ate coarser plant material than Diplodocus and Apatosaurus
