Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra promises holidaze hits and a tree

It’s beginning to feel a lot like . . .
Beginning?
The holidaze, the mall hauls, the nightmares of forgotten gifts, is in full power.
Taking in the sound of music (this does not mean watching the recent Carrie Underwood nightmare of the Rodgers and Hammerstein TV special) might hit the right notes.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra celebrates the holiday season at Highmark Holiday Pops with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and a cast of guest artists on December 20 and 21. Audiences also can enjoy Heinz Hall that a top elf swears is “decorated beautifully for the holidays, complete with a 25-foot tree in the Grand Lobby.”
Todd Ellison will conduct the festivity with carols such as “Joy to the World,” “Deck the Halls” and “Silent Night,” along with other seasonal favorites such as the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah, Marvin Hamlisch’s “Chanukah Lights” and “A ‘Spike Jones’ Jingle Bells” played by the Pittsburgh Symphony Brass; principal trumpet George Vosburgh will solo on “The Christmas Song.”
Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday; 2:30 and 8 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets range from $21 to $99; call 412.392.4900 or visit pittsburghsymphony.org.
