2014 Chesapeake Open
The Baltimore Figure Skating Club’s annual Chesapeake Open competition continues through Saturday, June 21. Skaters representing local skating clubs the Pittsburgh Figure Skating Club and the Skating Club of Mt. Lebanon will compete in a variety of IJS and 6.0 events at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Md. Steel City Blades synchronized skating workshops
Pittsburgh’s first competitive synchronized skating team, Steel City Blades, is hosting its annual team workshops on Friday and Saturday at the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island. These workshops are designed to help prepare interested skaters for Monday’s tryouts for the 2014-2015 skating season. Skaters will be placed into designated workshop groups depending on his/her skating level, experience and age. Workshops kick off Friday evening from 4:00-6:50 p.m. with a general practice session that will cover the skills required for team skating and conclude Saturday morning with a session focused on team development, synchro elements, footwork and formations from 8:00-10:50 a.m. Tryouts for the season will be on Monday evening from 4:00-6:20 p.m. Workshops and tryout fee is $115 per skater; for more information, please contact RMU Island Sports Center skating director Beth Sutton at (412) 397-4469.
Public skating sessions
Several public skating will be held over the weekend to help you beat the heat as summer makes its official arrival to the region. Check out Sunday’s $5 public session from 3:00-4:20 p.m. at BladeRunners Harmarville location; admission includes skate rental. There is also a Friday evening public session at the Ice Connection of Pittsburgh from 7:40-9:00 p.m. Admission is $7 and skate rental is available for an additional $3.
