The Pitt basketball team beat Penn State 78-69 at the Petersen Events Center in last season's ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It was the Panthers' first year in the ACC and therefore, their first appearance in the annual inter-conference basketball challenge.
This season, Pitt will play the challenge on the road. The ACC announced Thursday that the Panthers will travel to Indiana for the 2014 challenge. It will be the Sixteenth ACC Big Ten Challenge. The game will be televised on an ESPN station to be determined.
The game is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind. Pitt has not played at Indiana in 73 years. On Dec. 26, 1941, the Hoosiers beat the Panthers 50-41.
This will mark the ninth time the Panthers and Hoosiers will meet on the basketball court. The series is tied4-4. Pitt and Indiana last met in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 8, 2009, when the Hoosiers won 74-64.
The two schools also faced each other in the 2003 NCAA Tournament in Boston. Pitt advanced with a 74-52 win over the Hoosiers in the second round, but the Panthers lost to Marquette (led by Dwayne Wade) 77-74 in the Sweet Sixteen round.
The ACC leads the series with a 10-3-2 record. In 2013, the two conferences tied the event for the second consecutive season, with each league claiming six games each. All 14 Big Ten teams and 14 of the 15 ACC teams (no Florida State) will participate in the 2014 Challenge.
Pitt returns three starters from a team that finished 26-10 overall and advanced to its 12th NCAA Tournament in the last 13 seasons.
