Pitt hosts ESPN Gameday, but it was not enough to break losing streak

ESPN’s Gameday, the college basketball preview show, travels across the country and appears at different college campuses each Saturday morning. On January 21, the gameday crew was at the Pedersen Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.

The cast of Jay Bilas, Digger Phelps, Hubert Davis, and Rece Davis broadcasted from midcourt with a couple thousand energetic Oakland Zoo members, Pitt’s student cheering section, standing in the background cheering during the two-hour broadcast.

One of the biggest uproars from the crowd came when the crew was discussing college sports in general and mentioned the University of West Virginia. The fans jeered mid-sentence.

During one break, the fans in unison cheered “We love Paul Chryst” in recognition of Pitt’s new football coach, who was in attendance with his assistant coaches and some football recruits. The new coach stood up and waived to the thankful crowd.

The last segment consisted of the cast predicting the outcome of Saturday night’s Pitt-Louisville game. Davis, and Bilas picked Louisville. Digger picked Pitt.

As it turned out, Davis and Bilas were correct as Pitt (11-9, 0-7 Big East) fell to the visiting Cardinals 73-62 to remain winless in the Big East Conference this year.

Ashton Gibbs and Lamar Patterson each scored 14 points and starting point guard Travon Woodall returned to the lineup but it was not enough to curb the Cardinals (15-5, 3-4 Big East) hot shooting.

Kyle Couric scored 21 points and Chane Behanan scored a career-high 19 points in leading the Cardinals to the win. The Cardinals led 31-28 at the half and led throughout most of the second half.

The Panthers continue Big East play on Wednesday in search of their first conference win this season when the host Providence.
