A funny thing happened at Fenway Park this week: the Boston Red Sox got solid starting pitching in three consecutive games, and even won them all!
- On Monday, Clay Buchholz pitched into the sixth against the Angels and left with a 7-4 lead.
- On Tuesday, Jon Lester shut the Halos down for his eight full innings, during which he allowed only one run and struck out five.
- And then tonight, John Lackey fought through some early imprecision to pitch seven innings of one-run, two-hit ball.
To be sure, the club still has a long, possibly futile chase ahead of it as it endeavors to catch the front-running Rays and/or second-place Yankees for an eventual post-season berth. But signs are beginning to emerge that the Sox’s early case of Bad-News-Bearitis is beginning to pass – and not a moment too soon, what with the Yanks coming to town on Friday.
Anybody here think Daisuke Matsuzaka can keep the streak going tomorrow? (Neither do I.) Or Josh Beckett against New York on Friday? (Ditto.) Enjoy it while you can, Sox fans, for reality is about to bite.
