The winter meetings have come and gone and Kenny Williams made just one deal. Yet, many reports still have the Sox active in the trade market. Two names that appear to be off that list however, at least for the time being, are John Danks and Gavin Floyd.
Williams stated last week that he likes his staff as is and won’t be giving up quality starters for fifty cents on the dollar this offseason. Speaking to the Chicago Sun-Times, the GM discussed his hopes for next year and beyond:
“It’s not the worst thing in the world to go into the season with pitching that you like and position players that you like, and you just hope a few of them [Adam Dunn, Alex Rios, Beckham] will rebound. If we can do a little bit of both, rebuilding of the minor-league system and compete at the major-league level, that’s not the worst thing in the world. We’ll try to evolve from there.’’
And that’s the difficult task so few organizations in MLB have been able to accomplish. Kenny’s work is far from done and more moves seem to be on the horizon. Carlos Quentin and Gordon Beckham are both guys that other teams have contacted the Pale Hose about. And it seems both can be had as well…if the price is right.
