'Pitch Perfect 2': Skylar Astin and Ben Platt returning

On May 21 Entertainment Weekly posted the news that actors Skylar Astin and Ben Platt will be returning for "Pitch Perfect 2," the sequel for the popular film "Pitch Perfect," which followed groups of collegiate a cappella singers in national competitions. Astin portrayed the male lead of Jesse in the first film and one of the only returning members who had not been confirmed for the sequel.

Platt played the role of Benji, who was Jesse's roommate and at first was a cast out from the Treblemakers. However, Benji managed to help the group and fulfill his a cappella dreams. Platt posted a photo from the set of himself and Astin hanging out. Production on the film has been in the works for weeks, but filming officially began this week in Baton Rouge.

Several other cast members from the original film will be returning including Rebel Wilson who plays Fat Amy, Anna Kendrick as Beca and Brittany Snow as Chloe. Other returning members are Adam DeVine as Bumper, Hanna Mae Lee, Ester Dean, and Alexis Knapp. Newcomers include Hailee Steinfeld and Katey Segal as a daughter and mother pair.

On May 21 Moviepilot reported that the film will pick up a few years later, when Beca is a senior and facing her final year as a Barden Bella. The film will be directed by Elizabeth Banks, who had a small role as an announcer in the first film, and was an executive producer. The film is scheduled to be released on May 15, 2015.

Much like most films and the original movie, the sequel is being shot out of order. Anna Kendrick revealed on her official Twitter account that everyone is working on choreography for the big finale dance scene on the first day of filming. Production is expected to continue through the summer, and be filmed completely in Louisiana just like the first film.

Kay Cannon created the script for the first film based on the book "Pitch Perfect" which is about college a cappella competitions. She has also penned the sequel which was a smash success at the box office in 2012. Platt and Astin are returning as Treblemakers while Fat Amy and Beca will lead the Barden Bellas with help from newcomer Hailee Steinfeld.
