On April 30 Comingsoon.net revealed that actress Hailee Steinfeld will join the cast of the upcoming sequel "Pitch Perfect 2," playing a new member of the Barden Bellas. The sequel was announced last year and will be the directorial debut of actress Elizabeth Banks. The story will take place during Beca and Fat Amy's senior year at school and explore what happens now that they are in charge of the group.
Steinfeld is known for her Oscar nominated role in the western remake "True Grit" and she played a major role in the science fiction thriller "Ender's Game." The upcoming a cappella sequel will bring back actresses Anna Kendrick as Beca, Brittany Snow as Chloe, and Rebel Wilson as Fat Amy, who were all members of the Barden Bellas and helped the group win the national competition over the Treblemakers. The film is scheduled for release in May 2015 and Kay Cannon will return to write the script.
On April 30 CBS News posted tweets from Steinfeld's official Twitter account, which confirm the actress is appearing in the film and is excited to join the cast. After the break out success of the first film, it's possible that Steinfeld is being groomed to lead the franchise should a third film be green lit by the studio. The film grossed over one hundred million dollars at the box office and the soundtrack landed on the Billboard charts. The single "Cups," which was added to the film because Kendrick knew how to perform it after watching videos on Reddit, went triple platinum.
Steinfeld's role in the new film is being kept under wraps, and she will head to Baton Rouge for filming in the coming weeks. She will next appear in the film "Begin Again" which will be released theatrically in July. The film will be a chance for Steinfeld to show off her dancing and singing abilities as the Bellas rebuild their winning team after the departure of seniors Aubrey and Chloe.
Production on the film is already underway and more casting announcements should be released in the coming weeks. Universal has scheduled the film for release on May 15, 2015 to compete as a summer blockbuster against some highly anticipated superhero films. So far, no other cast members from the original film have signed on to appear in the sequel.
