No matter which way we turn, there seems to always be negative press on Pitbull Terriers! How is it that we can get the word out that these dogs are only as bad as the people associated with them?
In just the past 24 hours alone, various stories of neglect have come across the wire that seems to put Pitbulls in the wrong light. Take for instance the news story yesterday about the 14-month old boy that died as the result of a Pitbull attack in southeastern Wisconsin. The boy was in the care of a 30-year old woman that owned the dogs; no real decisive reports as to the relationship of the woman to the boy. Evidently the woman sustained some injuries as well, but the little boy’s injuries were life-threatening. Although he was flown to the Milwaukee hospital, he could not be saved. His time of death was reported to be 3:30 p.m.
An investigation is underway, but several questions remain like why was the boy in the care of this woman? Why were the dogs provoked to attack? Were these dogs trained to act in this way?
Then today, another story of neglect and desperation was released. This one centering around an abandoned Pitbull that was desperate to survive in New Orleans. This dog was discovered in an abandoned building on the corner of North Johnson after a call came into animal control officers about a dog whimpering in desperation, unable to get out of the building it sought refuge in. The question in this case is why was this poor dog was found alone on the streets in the first place?
Unfortunately it is these stories that we hear all too often. The breed is blamed, not the people that own the dogs, mistreat the dogs, abandon the dogs, or train the dogs to act in a violent manner. Then it is the innocents, like the little baby yesterday, which must suffer the consequences!
It’s a Pittie Rescue, the Chicagoland Bully Breed Rescue and the Anti-Cruelty Society in and around Chicago are just a few of the rescue organizations that are attempting to put a stop to activities that shine a poor light on the Pitbull breed. They are taking the dogs in, retraining them and finding them homes in which they can be loved, survive and thrive. They want to prevent both the dogs and the innocent people from coming to any more harm. Let’s all help these great area shelters and rescues to help clear the name of the breed and save the dogs in the process!
