Things have been moving non stop for 32 -year-old Armando Christian “Pitbul” Pérez since his 2004 debut. After his fourth album Rebelution spawned his first hit single "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)", and 2011’s Planet Pit, produced his first number one hit "Give Me Everything", the Miami born rapper/record producer has been all over the place.
Fast forward to October 7, 2013, and the globally successful “Timber” is released. Taken from his EP Meltdown, “Timber” is the Cuban rapper’s second appreance on the US Billboard Hot 100. It is most successful single to date reaching number one in 18 different countries, including the United Kingdom and Germany. The song is also the first U.K. No. 1 for 2014.
Although performed by harmonica player Paul Harrington, “Timber” interpolates 1979‘s "San Francisco Bay" Danish harmonica player Lee Oskar, of the iconic funk band War.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, this is also the fourth week for "Timber" atop the Digital Songs chart, with 301,000 downloads sold.
One huge surprise is that after a four-week stint at No. 2, the hit replaced Eminem and Rihanna’s mega hit “The Monster”, which after an impressive 10 weeks week atop the Billboard 100, has slipped to No. 3.
Now who’s the leading lady? None other than California girl Ke$ha. Since exploding onto the scene in 2010, with her nine week mega hit “Tik Tok”, the Los Angeles native has stapled herself into dance-pop history. In an interview in December 2013, Pitbull revealed that Rihanna was supposed to be his featured artist on “Timber”, but due to schedule conflicts, was unavailable for the duet. Pitbull then asked Ke$ha to be the featured artist instead. To his delight, she accepted.
The dynamic duo gave a rousing performance of the chart topper at last year’s American Music Awards on November 24, 2013.
Can they hold the top spot? Only time will tell.
