Pit bull tears thumb from 8 year old in Va.

Eight and nine-year old siblings were attacked by a pit bull Sunday afternoon on Corann Drive, just outside of their home in King William County, Va.

The children were playing when they were attacked by a pit bull belonging to one of their neighbors. The eight-year-old girl was bitten on the neck and hand, and her thumb was reportedly bitten off. Her nine-year-old brother suffered bites to his chest. He was able to alert a neighbor by pounding upon the front door.

Both children were transported to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. The girl is still a patient following surgery but her brother has been treated and released.

The two-year-old pit bull, owned by another neighbor, was not thought to have previously run at large. The dog's owner also owns a Shar Pei. It is not known whether the Shar Pei was also involved in the attack. Both dogs have been impounded pending further investigation.

King William County law requires that dogs be securely leashed when not caged or fenced.
