A 10-year-old pit bull saves a family from a fire that erupted at a home in Lincoln County, Okla. Baby, the pit bull, displayed an incredible act of heroism by alerting the family of the fire. On Feb. 13, KOCO shared the details of this amazing story about a heroic pit bull.
It all happened early Tuesday when smoke and flames started to engulf the family's home. Rhonda Westenberger told media sources that she and her sister, Evelyn, were sleeping when they heard Baby barking.
Unbeknownst to the two sisters, their house was on fire. According to Rhonda and her sister, their pit bull would not stop barking and pouncing on them until they eventually woke up and when they did, they had just seconds to escape from a fire that was quickly spreading throughout their home.
"I went back and there were flames shooting down the hallway," said Rhonda. "If baby hadn't woken Evelyn up, I don't think either one of us would have come out of this."
Although the sisters managed to escape an almost certain death, there was another problem. There were five other five dogs trapped inside. However, Baby, was there to answer the call of duty once more and sprang into action to save her canine companions.
"And then there was one hiding under the bed, wouldn't come out," said family member Charles Land. "Baby actually went under there, grabbed it by the neck and dragged him outside."
Although the family's home of 17 years was destroyed and almost everything they had is gone, the family says all hope is not lost.
"Baby has always come across to us as one of the family and this just proves it," said Land.
"It brings my spirit up a lot to see the dogs," said Westenberger. "I'm so proud of her. She is my hero. She's the hero for all of us."
