Peoria, AZ: A sweet little brindle Pit Bull named Carmela was discovered to have chewed her own leg off after not receiving needed medical care for a year. The woman who should have been Carmela's guardian, 22-year-old Michelle Busse is facing charges animal cruelty, with the recommendations being made for felony charges.
The allegations are that Carmela was injured after being hit by a car a year ago. While any compassionate guardian would either get medical care for their beloved companion or at least have them put to sleep if their suffering was too great, instead it appears Carmela was relegated to the back yard of the home with no treatment whatsoever. Clearly she must have suffered unimaginable pain from her injured leg.
As animals do, Carmela dealt with the wounds by licking and chewing, eventually chewing her damaged leg down to nothing more than a bloody stump. The pictures provided here are horribly graphic, so please view them with caution. It's incomprehensible that anyone would allow their companion animal to suffer this kind of extreme pain for such an extended period of time.
What makes this even more horrific is that Busse reportedly did consult with a veterinarian who offered her a payment plan so that Carmella could receive medical treatment, but Busse allegedly declined, instead apparently choosing to let this precious dog suffer. (Source.)
When investigators received the tip about Carmela, they contacted Busse and then found Carmella suffering in the yard. She was taken to the Peoria Emergency Animal Clinic, where she received critical treatment for the injury and the infection that had set in. She was then taken to Sun Valley Animal Shelter, where she has been receiving the loving rehabilitation she needed.
Now that the crisis has passed, it's time for Carmela to find a new loving home. She is described as a happy, affectionate and loving girl, who has not let the loss of her leg slow her down one bit. It's recommend she be the only animal in the home. She's rambunctious, so older children would probably be best. Carmela deserves to spend the rest of her life in a home where she is a cherished family member, as all companion animals should be. Her life should be filled from now on with love and kindness and all of the things that go along with being the blessing that companion animals are to human guardians.
