Pistorius cricket bat: Evidence in Oscar Pistorius case, bloodied bat is key (Video)

Pistorius cricket bat becomes key evidence in case. A report posted today at The Guardian says Oscar Pistorius' bloodied cricket bat has raised more questions in the case against him. The athlete has been charged with murder for the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, and though he maintains his innocence, authorities insist they have a strong case against him.

The death of Reeva Steenkamp seems a mystery to many, but sources say authorities have leaked details about her death. In addition to information about the bloodied cricket bat, reports say Steenkamp was shot four times. Earlier reports say Pistorious thought his girlfriend was an intruder entering his home in the early morning hours on the day he reportedly shot her.

A police spokesperson said they will not be "commenting on anything in the newspapers today as the case is still before the court," and added that local news sources were "insinuating they got the information from the police. They did not."

However the respected newspaper reported Pistorius' cricket bat, found covered in blood at his home, was "the central piece of evidence against him." They allege sources close to the investigation told them Steenkamp's skull was crushed, and authorities requested Pistorius undergo drug tests.

"Steenkamp was still breathing and Pistorius tried to resuscitate her in the foyer," said the report. "Paramedics and police arrived on the scene and, minutes later, she was declared dead.

"Steenkamp was wearing her nightie at the time. When the police inspected Oscar's bedroom, they found her overnight bag and iPad on the floor. A holster for a 9mm pistol was found on Oscar's side of the bed."

Oscar Pistorius, 26, is set to apply for bail on Tuesday, which is the same day Steenkamp, 29, is expected to be cremated at a private funeral.

Barry Steenkamp, Reeva's father, said his family was struggling to come to terms with her death, but added: "There is no hatred in our hearts," adding of Pistorius: "He must be going through things that we don't know about. We ask the Lord every day to help us find a reason why this should happen to Reeva. She was the most beautiful, kind girl in the world."
