With February 26, 2010 being World Pistachio Day it made me wonder just what is a pistachio?
Pistachios are hard shelled nuts, or fruit, that grow in regions of Asia such as Greece, Turkey, and Afghanistan. They are small in size but mighty in health benefits.
These little guys contain enough nutrients to help prevent heart disease, lower cholesterol, and even fight cell damage according to www.pistachiohealth.com. Thats right-a whole site dedicated to all the benefits packed into that budding shell.
Here are some other fun facts about pistachios:
Watching your weight? A 1 oz. serving is equal to 49 pistachios compared to 22 almonds or 18 cashews. Nicknamed the "Skinny Nut" pistachios are high in fiber, low in fat and calories, making them one of the lowest caloried foods. If you're following the Weight Watchers program a 1 oz. serving is worth 4 points.
But if you're like some people and you prefer to just enjoy the flavors and textures without knowing all the bells and whistles you can sample a delightful dish called pistachio kulfi. Indian in origin, this delightful treat is cool and sweet to the tongue. It is the perfect ending to a spicy curry dish. You can make kulfi at home using this recipe: http://www.recipehound.com/Recipes/Recipes2/7171.html.
There is a local restaurant serving up bowls of pistachio kulfi and that is The Jewel Of the Crown-Cuisine of India in Scottsdale. They are located at: 7373 East Scottsdale Mall, Scottsdale, Az 85251. For more information and to view the menu go to www.jewelofthecrown.net.
Whatever your choice enjoy World Pistachio Day and discover a new friend in your quest for better health!
