GUILFORD-- The Piscataquis community high school (PCHS) baseball team will be looking to take the next step during the 2014 season.

That goal is a trip to the Eastern Maine playoffs.

PCHS baseball has shown quite an improvement on the field during the last two seasons.

"As a whole over the last two years has committed less errors than previous years,"PCHS coach John Riitano said. "We continues to head in the right direction."

The Pirates won two games last year, and were in many games against difficult competition throughout the season.

That is quite a leap for a program that won only one game the previous five seasons.

"We hope to win a few more games this year and hope to make the playoffs. The guys are enthusiastic and excited to start the season,"Riitano said. "We have a young team, only two seniors, and we only lost two starters from last season."

The focus for the young Pirates is on the fundamentals of the game.

"The coaching staff continues to stress the fundamentals of the game,"Riitano said. "Some kids have not played in many years and have formed bad habits so those are the challenges we face."

Another challenge may be getting outside to practice before the regular season starts.

The Pirates are scheduled to open the season at Foxcroft Academy on April 22nd.

Currently the fields in Guilford and Dover-Foxcroft are covered with snow.

The Pirates are scheduled to play their home opener on April 28th. Click here for the full schedule.
