The Pack were offensively anemic for the first half of the game only managing eleven shots in the first two periods. They were down 3-0 before Wolf Pack forward Kyle Jean grabbed a loose puck and scored on a short break away getting the Pack within two scores of a tie. It wasn't to be though as the Pack fell further behind. It was just a few minutes later when the Pirates scored their fourth goal and with under a minute left in the second period.
A bright spot was the Pack net minder. Jason Missiaen played well the rest of the way making some point blank saves in what has to be the Monarch Butterfly of butterfly style saves. Mount Missiaen's six foot, eight inch frame can make a shooter feel like the net has disappeared.
Even though Portland was win-less coming into this game there were going to be some challenges for the Pack. Starting goalie Cam Talbot, and forwards Chris Krieder and Brandon Mashinter are up with the New York Rangers. The Pack called up two forwards from their affiliate in Greenville of the ECHL. Adam Rowe and Michael St.Croix, whom wore number 22 and 38, were the early season leading scorers for the Road Warriors of Greenville. Neither of them got on the board tonight but they will see more action this weekend.
Captain Aaron Johnson sets a pretty good example for the team he finishes passes and finds the open man up the ice his offensive and physical play also were impressive tonight. It was his assist that led to Danny Kristo's goal in the third period. Johnson had the puck in the offensive zone and Kristo, off to his right along the boards, banged his stick to get the puck. Johnson passed to Kristo and the Kristo wrist-o beat Portland goalie Mark Visentin.
That was it though for offense, the Pack pulled Missiaen with a couple of minutes left and they applied some pressure but they ran out of time. It was the teams first regulation home loss. Portland capitalized on 3 of 8 power plays, one of them being a 5 on 3.
The announced attendance was 2,032. Next up the Pack play on the road for a two game set. They play the Devils in Albany on Friday and then the Bears in Hershey Pennsylvania. You can listen to Bob Crawford call the game on 1410AM radio.
