The St. Paul Pioneer Press 1-30-12 reported that the largest group working against a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota has raised $1.2 million. This group called “Minnesotans United for All Families” seems to defy it’s name, as there are an estimated 10,207 same-sex families in Minnesota, according to the 2010 revised U.S. Census, as reported by the Minneapolis Star and Tribune 9-27-11.
There are so many ways we judge others in our life, placing parameters on who is acceptable, who is not, who is worthy of our time or money, etc. While I believe true judging is for God, I also believe that to some extent judging is necessary in our lives, for optimal survival and benefit. If we chose to allow hardened, psychotic criminals roam the streets, and not judge their crimes and behavior, truly we would all be at risk. And other discriminatory judgments regarding our safety are clearly beneficial to our overall quality of life. However, when we cross the line and judge someone for criteria they were born with, such as color of skin or sexual preference, we do our society and ourselves a disservice.
Being a homosexual often entails living in fear of hate crimes, with a family who does not accept them, and being discriminated against. Would anyone knowingly choose to be homosexual and live under these conditions? People do not wake-up one day and wrestle with choosing which gender they wish to be attracted. To the contrary, it is something that has always existed; it is the way we each are born.
We must remember that we are ALL created in God’s image. Not just those of a certain race, sexual orientation, or religion. God does not make mistakes. The third attribute of the thirteen attributes of God is, “Lord of the Universe, Ruler of Nature, and Mankind.” It does not say, “…Ruler of most of Nature and some of Mankind.” People are created of Divine energy, and upon death, our “body’s ‘returning to the earth’ is directly commensurate with the soul’s ability to return to the supernal Source from which it is drawn” (chabad.org). As such, the human experience, regardless of one’s sexual orientation, should be celebrated.
Moreover, being that we were created in God’s image, I don’t believe it is up to us to make judgments about another’s being. If we choose to place our self in a position of a judge, condemning others for their simple existence, are we not additionally saying, we are superior, we have all the answers? Is that possible in human form? While in human form, we cannot know all of the answers, as such; I believe it is wise to live within the confines of love, inclusiveness, and acceptance.
