Pioneer Life Week is scheduled to take place at Carter Caves State Resort Park, near Olive Hill, the week of July 21-27, 2014.

Visitors to this event can experience Kentucky as it was 200 years ago. Pioneers and Native Americans survived by using natural resources and developed skills to cope with their environment.

The pioneer encampment will be set up near the park campgrounds and is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 27.

Some of the programs will include tomahawk throwing, black powder rifle demonstrations, flint knapping, spinning and weaving demonstrations, cabin chinking, primitive fire making demonstrations, and pioneer clothing interpretation. Most events are free.

Country Fair Day will be held on Saturday, July 26, and will feature old farm tools and machinery, woodcarving, seed spitting, horn smithing, pottery making, pioneer toys, flute music, a pie auction, and much more. A free ice cream social will start at 4:00 p.m.

For more information about Pioneer Life Week or to make reservations for accommodations at either the lodge or a cottage, call (800) 325-0059.

Carter Caves State Resort Park was established in 1946 and, as the name suggests, caves are a big part of the park. Bat Cave is the largest of the caves at the park and is the hibernation location to an estimated 40,000 Indiana bats. Bat Cave is only open to tours in the summer but X Cave and Cascade Cave tours are available year round.

Carter Caves is home to the Lewis Caveland Lodge. Constructed with native fieldstone, the lodge has 28 rooms, each with a private balcony or patio overlooking the surrounding woodlands. The lodge also has a dining room, Tierney’s Cavern Restaurant, with seating for 100.

Other facilities at the park include caves, cottages, campground, picnic areas, golf course, miniature golf, and a large outdoor pool.

Carter Caves is less than 150 from Metro Louisville via I-64. From exit 161 near Olive Hill, follow the signs to the park. Detailed directions can be found using Google Maps.
