Co-founder and CEO of Pinterest, Ben Silberman, announced on September 19, 2013 that they are looking into ways of making money with the platform.
In his email to all of the users, Ben promises there won't be any banner ads or anything interfering with the user experience. His email outlines what the promotions will look like:
- Tasteful—No flashy banners or pop-up ads.
- Transparent—We’ll always let you know if someone paid for what you see, or where you see it.
- Relevant—These pins should be about stuff you're actually interested in, like a delicious recipe, or a jacket that's your style.
- Improved based on your feedback—Keep letting us know what you think, and we'll keep working to make things better.
Pinterest will run tests with promoted pins in search results and specific feeds. As of today this is just a test run, no one will be charged.
We will see where this goes. His plans sound a lot like sponsored stories on Facebook.
