Pinterest Arts and Crafts: Crayon Ornaments

See also

With the Christmas season here, opportunities for crafts are abundant. After all, who wouldn’t want to fill their home with plenty of things that the kids have created? Sure, they aren’t perfect; but that’s often the best thing about it! If you’re homeschooling your kids, you want to be sure that they have plenty of creative opportunities throughout a typical week, so taking advantage of a few Christmas crafts is beneficial to their minds (they get a “brain break” and exercise some creativity) and to their impatience (they get to both do something to celebrate the Christmas holiday, and take a break from traditional schoolwork for a while). So why not have them make a few pretties to hang on the tree?

Materials:

Crayons (old ones are best—the ones that are broken or too short for regular use are even better!)

Glass ball ornaments

Hair dryer

Newspaper (for covering the counter)

Process:

Remove the paper from the crayons. You’ll need around one and a half crayons, maybe a little less, for each ornament. Break them into pieces (the smaller, the better) and drop them into the ball. Put down your newspaper so that your counter is protected—melted crayon isn’t the worst thing in the world to clean up, but it’s not fun, either. Heat up the crayons with the dryer and watch them melt. Once they’ve started melting, continue heating while swirling the crayons around inside the ball.

The verdict:

This is definitely a project for older kids! They had a lot of fun with it, but there were some slightly singed fingers in the process. It’s a great art project that won’t take too long (half a dozen ornaments were done in less than half an hour, with only one hair dryer), but that will let your kids practice their creativity. They may need adult assistance to finish the tops of the balls, so be prepared to singe your own fingers a little bit.

The kids loved both the ornaments and the process—and they’re excited by the fact that they represent the beginning of the Christmas season.
