This Sunday, 3.3.13 marks the first ever Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day.
This inaugural event was created by the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation, a foundation dedicated to education, support, treatment, and awareness of this sub-type of breast cancer.
Triple negative breast cancer is a unique type of breast cancer in the fact that it tests negative for three receptors that are found in breast cancers. This also makes this type of breast cancer more aggressive and more difficult to treat.
Triple negative breast cancer is statistically more prevalent in younger women and African American women.
Triple negative breast cancer was brought to light and made famous when Good Morning America's host Robin Roberts was diagnosed with this deadly type of breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 46.
With it's aggressive characteristics and limited treatment options this cancer has also known to have higher mortality rates and greater re occurrence and metastasis rates.
In order to raise awareness of this devastating disease the TNBC Foundation created 3.3.13, Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day and enlisted the various warriors in pink from across the country to help spread the word and make some noise.
In correlation with the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation, one of those pink warriors known as Triple Step Toward the Cure is celebrating the first ever Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day on 3.3.13 with their “Pins for a purpose” campaign.

The "Pins for a purpose" campaign calls for supporters across the globe to bring awareness to this rare sub type of breast cancer by buying and wearing Triple Step’s symbolic “high heel” awareness pins for this special day.
“This very simple yet powerful campaign will raise awareness and funding for TNBC. The recent strides we have seen in breast cancer research are very encouraging but we want to shed light on this particular sub type I believe this campaign is a fun way to do that,” says Lori Flowers, Co founder and CEO of Triple Step Toward the Cure®.
Captains for the campaign supported the effort by selling 10 pins, each captain will be entered into a drawing to win a prize valued at $150. Singular supporters of the campaign got involved by purchasing a $10 Triple Step Toward the Cure awareness pin, taking a photo wearing the pin and sending it to Triple Step Toward the Cure.
These inspirational photos will be unveiled on the Triple Step website on 3.3.13. A $100 shoe related gift card will be awarded to the most creative photo. All participants who sent in their photos will be automatically entered to win a $50 shoe related gift card.
Supporters are also encouraged to spread the word about the campaign by liking Triple Step Toward the Cure on Facebook, asking three friends to do the same, wearing the awareness pin on 3.3.13 and placing the pin photo as their Facebook profile picture on that day.
“We are a California based organization, but we support women diagnosed with TNBC nationwide. My hope is that this campaign will spread across the nation. The proceeds from the sale of this pin will help us to continue programs that provide services ranging from financial aid for rent, transportation, groceries, and childcare to assistance locating clinical trials and quality medical care,” says Flowers.
Triple Step Toward the Cure recently attended C4YW, the Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer in their tireless effort raising awareness for triple negative breast cancer, for Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day, and their "Pins for a Purpose" campaign.
Young survivors throughout the country could be found at this one of a kind conference purchasing those high heeled "Pins for a purpose" and supporting Triple Step Toward the Cure.
Being a triple negative breast cancer survivor myself and living by the motto to "fight like a girl in lipstick and heels" my pink high heel pin is a symbol of strength in my fight as well as a reminder of all of the beautiful women fighting triple negative breast cancer.
